ACT Government supports new ANZAC traditionActing ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher MLA is supporting calls for the New Zealand national anthem to be played during ANZAC Day commemorations in ACT schools, starting this year. “I commend the Queensland Premier Anna Bligh for putting this fitting tribute on the agenda, in her capacity as Chairwoman of the ANZAC Day Commemorative Committee (ADCC),” Ms Gallagher said. “Australians must never forget the strength of the bonds created when Australian and New Zealand soldiers demonstrated such remarkable courage, endurance and mateship at Gallipoli in 1915. “At that time, nearly a century ago, the ANZAC legend was born. And the growing numbers that attend ANZAC Day ceremonies at Gallipoli, here in Canberra and around the nation show the spirit of ANZAC today is stronger than ever. “We will write to the ACT branch of the RSL to seek their support in having ‘God Defend New Zealand,’ the New Zealand national anthem, played together with ‘Advance Australia Fair’ at ANZAC Day ceremonies in all ACT schools. “It is a rare occasion for two countries to share the same Remembrance Day and to make reference to both countries in its name. As neighbours we share something very special and I believe the playing of both anthems in school ceremonies will help add to the meaning of the day.” Ms Gallagher said the two anthems were played proudly when Australia and New Zealand square off in the annual ANZAC Day rugby league test match. “While most Australians now regard New Zealand as our greatest sporting rival, it is important we never forget exactly how the ANZAC tradition was born - a tradition that has helped shape our national identity and remains such an important part of our national consciousness.” Most schools in the ACT hold their Anzac Day ceremonies in the days leading up to ANZAC Day. In 2010, ANZAC Day – April 25 – falls on a Sunday and the public holiday will be observed the following day.
