Last chance to nominate your choice for2010 Canberra Citizen of the YearCanberrans have less than two weeks to nominate someone they deem worthy of consideration for the 2010 Canberra Citizen of the Year award. Acting Chief Minister Katy Gallagher MLA said the Canberra Citizen of the Year Award recognised those who have made a significant contribution to our community. “The award is a chance for us all to acknowledge those people within our community who help to make Canberra the wonderful place that it is,” Ms Gallagher said. “The award is all about raising the profile of those who excel in their service to the Canberra community in the hope that others may be encouraged to follow in their footsteps.” The 2009 Canberra Citizen of the Year was Bishop Pat Power who was recognised for his advocacy for vulnerable members of our community and for striving for the betterment of our society. Other past recipients have included John Mackay (2008) who was recognised for his leadership and work in business and the community; Jack Waterford AM (2007) for his contribution to journalism and Aboriginal health; Bob Sobey (2002) for his work with the Police Citizens Youth Club and disabled and disadvantaged youth; and Stasia Dabrowski (1996) for her work in providing a soup kitchen each Friday night for the disadvantaged and homeless. This year’s winner will be awarded by Chief Minister Jon Stanhope in March as part of Canberra’s birthday celebrations. Ms Gallagher is also encouraging Canberrans to nominate family members, friends and colleagues who have lived in Canberra for 50 years or longer for a Canberra Gold Chief Minister's Award. “Businesses and community organisations who have served our city for 50 years or more are also able to be nominated,” she said. "The Canberra Gold Chief Minister's Awards acknowledge community members, sporting and community groups, and businesses that have helped shape our city. "The awards provide an opportunity to say thank you to all those who have helped build a city that we're immensely proud of.” Nomination forms can be obtained from ACT Government shopfronts, community centres, local Members’ offices, public libraries, online at www.cmd.act.gov.au, or from the Chief Minister’s Department on 02 6205 3031. Nominations for the 2010 awards close Friday 22 January 2010.
