Grants available for programs to prevent falls

ACT Health Minister, Katy Gallagher MLA, is encouraging groups to apply for the latest round of funding for projects that reduce the incidence and severity of falls and injuries among older Canberrans.

The ACT Health Promotion Grants Program 2010-11 Stay On Your Feet® Falls Prevention Funding Round is now taking applications.

“This is part of the Government’s annual preventative health program to help people stay healthy and out of hospital,” Ms Gallagher said.

“A total of $200,000 in funding is available for eligible projects that aim to reduce the incidence and severity of falls and falls-related injuries among older people in the ACT,” she said.

“Community groups, not-for-profit organisations and government agencies are encouraged to apply for funding for projects that develop and strengthen partnerships and increase consumer and carer participation in the reduction of falls and falls-related injury in older Canberrans.

“Falls can be very debilitating for older people and can cause serious injuries that require long-term care and rehabilitation.

“That’s why the ACT Government is committed to promoting the development and implementation of evidenced–based falls prevention programs in the ACT, as part of our preventative health measures.”
