ACT Labor to fund a free ‘Centenary Loop’

We all share a sense of pride in our city. ACT Labor continues to invest in Canberra to make it an even better place to live, work, study and play.

The Centenary of Canberra in 2013 is a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the symbolism of Australia’s national capital and its qualities as a leading twenty-first century city.

The year-long celebration will provide Canberrans and visitors alike, the chance to see Canberra at its best with an ambitious program to showcase the best of our city and what it will become.

We expect hundreds of thousands of Australians to flock to our city to join in the celebrations and ACT Labor wants to make sure their visit is the best it can be.

ACT Labor wants to enhance the experience of all participating in the Centenary celebrations, and to make sure that the Parliamentary Triangle is best placed to deal with the increased pressure on parking and traffic.

If re-elected in 2012, ACT Labor will invest $750,000 for a free ‘Centenary Loop’ which will connect the Parliamentary Triangle with the city centre and our national capital icons and attractions for our Centenary year.

The ‘Centenary Loop’ will be a 7 day a week, half hourly service during our Centenary year servicing Canberrans as well as visitors to our city.

The service will provide another option in addition to ACTION’s current ‘gold line’ services, for people who work on in the Parliamentary Zone, to travel to the City.

The service is proposed to operate with specially ‘wrapped’ Centenary of Canberra ACTION buses.

Policy costings

The total operating cost will be $750,000 for 11 months operation, 1 February to 31 December 2013.  The 2013 ‘Centenary Loop’ will provide half hourly services, 18 trips per day starting at 9am to 5.30pm, serviced by three buses.
