It was a pleasure to attend the second ACT Public Service Awards for Excellence today.
Congratulations to all the winners and those who were nominated – more than 100 individuals and teams – for the outstanding work they have done in the past year.
These individuals and teams represent a high quality public service that continues to excel in the support it provides to the ACT Government, and in the services it delivers direct to our community.
We can be demanding clients, and Budget season is a particularly demanding time of year.
But pressing on through the challenges and setbacks is a vital quality of a public servant, because the work they do affects the lives of Canberrans every day.
The nominees are people that have gone above and beyond the call of duty and made remarkable contributions to make our community a more equal, safe and healthy place.
The ACT’s unique city/state position means the breadth of our public service is greater than many other jurisdictions, they:
- run our education, health, legal and justice systems
- advise the government on urban, regional and economic development
- maintain our infrastructure
- provide vital community services, and
- help manage our natural environment.
And with the uncertainty in the air because of the coming federal election the role of the ACT Government and public service, as a source of stability and confidence in our community, is as important as ever.
I’d like to thank all finalists on behalf of the government for their contributions to Canberra in these challenging times – they should be very proud of their efforts.
This year’s awards recognise people who have excelled in the values defined by the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct, which was introduced last year.
